T22 – Tirage of the 161ST year
2021 was a year of climate adversity dominated by extremes, with heavy rain in the spring and thunderstorms and hail in the summer. Only the best winemakers selecting the best grapes with the finest comb were able to find exceptional fruits with great ageing potential. 2021 was also a year when the old Grand and Premier Crus came clearly on top after the chaos of the growing season.
This was not an easy assemblage to make, and our winemaking team produced 25 different blends before selecting Blend Number 6 from the Chef de Caves’ own precise balancing act between on one side the bright and freshest fruits selected from Harvest 2021 and on the other side the complexity brought by reserve wines going as far back as 2013.
Overall blend: 29% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir, 35% Meunier
On the Nose & Palate
A wealth of fresh red berries dominates this Brut, with marvelous strawberry flavors the way you would taste them when consuming the finest and lightest patisserie at a 3-star restaurant. Some fresh clementine and fresh orange peel aromas complement this sweet and acidic explosion of flavors in the mouth.
On the nose, what immediately charms you is a rich palate of fresh fruits picked at their peak of ripeness in summer. Red currant, blackberries and ripe apricots dominate this rich and well-structured wine.
For a wine as complex and layered as this 2021 blend, pairing it with food that can both complement and elevate its flavors is key. Given the freshness of the red berries, citrus notes, and the complexity from the aged reserve wines, we recommend dishes that have a balance of richness and freshness, as well as a bit of contrast to highlight the wine’s vibrant acidity and depth.
The bright citrus notes in the wine will play beautifully with the buttery richness of the lobster and the fresh acidity of the beurre blanc.
The fresh, delicate flavors of the scallops will harmonize with the wine’s fruit-forward profile, while the citrus glaze adds a refreshing contrast that mirrors the clementine and orange peel aromas in the wine.
The sweet, salty combination of prosciutto and fruit complements the wine’s red berry and clementine notes, with the Meunier’s aromatic complexity offering additional depth.
The fresh red berry notes in the wine would pair harmoniously with a fruit-based dessert. A strawberry tart with a crisp, buttery crust would beautifully mirror the wine’s fresh, light profile.
Given the orange peel and clementine aromas in the wine, a citrus-based dessert like an orange blossom sorbet or a lemon meringue tart would be an exquisite match.
